I have noticed that any NEW websites created on Angelfire will be forced to use Angelfire templates in their new website makeover and design. Anyone who had a site prior to Angelfire's makeover may still access the "webshell". For how long? We don't know. New Angelfire users must PAY to use the old Angelfire "webshell" that allowed for users to compile their own HTML.

The Genealogy Network Joomla site is current down w/ a server re-boot. The PhpGedView site usually available for registered users is ALSO facing issues w/ a 404 page or server configuration problems.
I am sorry for the troubole, however, this is a free website provider and they are working on the problem. Please be patient!

One of the original Navajo talkers dies at 91 in Arizona USA

Allen Dale June died Wednesday and was one of the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers of World War II.

There are two surviving members of the original 29.

This is a database of surnames that appear in several internet genealogy groups. The database is for anyone who is researching their genealogy so that they may be able to find a group that is possibly researching their ancestry and join it to connect with a researcher who is also researching their surname. There are several ways to view the data.

Oftentimes, when one is conducting research, we come across materials that ARE NOT on the person we are specifically looking for AND THIS information may be helpful to someone else. For those of you researching the SAME SURNAME this database can assist in finding a genealogy group to join and connecting with a researcher who is researching the same surname.

Not everyone will find their surname on the list, but the fact that there are over 10,000 surnames in 18 groups just floored me. Creating the database was fun and the results are free for all to peruse.

Someone way back in May in the GenHaven discussion boards asked about web providers. Actually, the post questioned "free domains", which is not the same as a free webhost provider. Anyway, I have looked at many alternatives in the past 6 months.

Here are a few free webspace providers. I've listed them in the order of my preference. I researched these websites earlier this year (Jan. 2009) a new free provider has since cropped up. x10hosting.com that I have found really nice. The only setback is that you have to log into their forums at least once every 2 weeks. (We'll see how that goes!) Also some of their free services have no support for CMS systems like Joomla, a Content Managing System. I had to install Joomla probably five times or so before it finally started working. x10hosting offers 3 SQL databases and 3 email addys at your site plus a host of other options worth looking into, I think. They also offer self hosted WordPress blogs, which I have had no issues with so far. x10hosting has had some upload problems, however, this week where I could not log in sometimes. So my other choices would be those listed below.

Yahoo Groups Message Search

This issue was slated to be "fixed" in March of 2009 and still persisits within a few Yahoo Groups. It is frustrating to fill out the various Yahoo forms in order to get your groups on an invisible list at Yahoo so that they can fix the problem. I personally, have filled out this form four or five times and nothing has been done to fix my message search feature. Additionally, Opera 10 beta is not functional in Yahoo Group message posts. I've sent an email to Yahoo Customer Service.

There has been some trouble on Yahoo Groups, lately. Yahoo in general has been difficult as far as email and group moderation. I myself had to save an email as a draft and THEN retrieve it to send from Yahoo Email in order to get the email to send. Brickwall Yahoo Group moderator has suggested that he/she cannot log in to access group messages and is looking for another moderator. I've emailed the moderator for more information. The Yahoo Group blog does not mention any issues concerning logging into moderate messages, currently. The moderator, Anne, is using Webtv.

Live Journal, Searching for our Ancestors, hosts the group post . The majority of responses came from Live Journal, but the question was posed to other groups, too. There were a variety of replys that considered the services offered in the article, but most genealogists in groups preferred to physically write down their passwords for family members to utilize later in a notebook. I prefer this method, too. A number of group managers who have had an internet presence in genealogy for quite some time stated that they became frustrated and depressed when regular posters just "disappeared" without explaination. And it has happened, evidently, to more than one group. A few even have their own member memorial pages.

RE: My introduction to German genealogy

A Genealogy Experience was the first to answer my question concerning "elections". A group lister posted that Wahl and Wahlen translate into "elections" (even though the placename has nothing to do with "elections"). This answer to my question provoked my thought that there was something lost in translation from German to English.

The site Administrator at Genealogy.net forum's assured me it wasn't likely that elections documentation existed both for the period and the area of research. (Of course my line of questioning was totally off due to the mis-understanding of the word "elections" in the German vs. English translation.) I didn't truely believe it - as the old saying goes, "If it is too good to be true...it likely isn't."

RootsChat has been a wonderful resource to me. Berlin-Bob introduced me to two different areas where my research could be located and offered me a link to the google map posted above. He also posted a link to Dick Eastman's article on the Kekule numbering system that many German genealogy programs are familiar with. He plays a dual role both as a mod and a translator in Ahnenforschung.org forums (Genealogy.net).

And there were many Yahoo Groups and Family Lobby members from GenHaven that participated in attempting to answer, too.

German Wahlen English Wahlen and a few Election redundancies RE: My introduction to German genealogy

I've discovered several items since my last post. The first being that the Google translation of Wahl or Wahlen into English is "election" or "elections". Considering the area of my research includes Wahlen, Prussia the source citation "elections" may be an unintentional error from Google that intended to be a place name. Proper names in Google may not be identified by its translator.

The second problem that I've run into is that the original online genealogy source is constantly revising itself and changing. The author is using a genealogy program. The urls change and so finding the information has become increasingly difficult both with each revision and url change.. Thank goodness I copied a bit to save for my own reference, otherwise I would still be digging for the information.

The author of the genealogy that I am researching, does not answer my emails. I have attempted to email him several times with questions and have translated my emails into German for him but without any response. Some of the genealogy that he has posted is incorrect or needs further clarification, but otherwise I believe it to be accurate and quite interesting.

In my next post I'll tell you which responses were my favorites. I am still waiting for a few more responses. This takes some time as in other areas of the Genealogy Network it is now night or day, I think. I am definitely going around the world with this question. So stay tuned..

A very good source of information is Church records. They will
date further back than birth or death records. The only problem with
researching in Germany is that what information is available
greatly varies between the different states in Germany. Also there are
many gaps due to the loss of records because of all of the wars. Your best bet is to visit http://www.worldgenweb.org (may be .com but I
don't think so). There you will need to click on Germany and then
the state you are researching. That website should be able to
tell you what information is available. A lot of church records are
also available on microfilm from the LDS. You can check their card
catalog to see if they have your German state and local church.

No. This is an online family tree in German that has three generations of my family tree included. Some of the information is incorrect, some of the information has not been proven - hence the citation questions and translation questions.

I am researching my 10g grandfather.

PS I have a response from another group that explains to me that Wahl or Wahlen means election or elections in translation from German to English. This created the word "election" next to my ancestor after it was translated. I unknowingly *assumed* that this was a source as many of this genealogists inputs have names, dates, locations and then oftentimes he places a source of his information next to the date he found in order to further confirm his information.

Google was correct in its translation, but incorrect to the extent of confusing Wahlen the town as an improper noun instead of a proper noun.

Thus the extant of my problem(s)!

Some have indicated that census also means elections. So I am still confused.

They may have used election records as their source. I have searched high and
low to discover meaning to the source and without additional information that is the only result I could see. Germany was very bureaucratic and kept excellent records on its populace. Even nowadays, Germany is quite Big Brotherish in its surveillance of the population. Itmay well be that there is no translation, its just what it means.

What are primary German genealogy sources?

I became interested in my family genealogy after finding a letter addressed to my grandfather with a postmark from Germany. My grandfather was researching our family tree and had found a living relative in Germany. I have found a few distant cousins in Kansas who also originated from Germany through message boards on Ancestry.

I was lucky enough to find three more generations of my family tree on line already with what looks like appropriate source information.

What I would like to know concerns German genealogy research and the types of sources available inside Germany - aside from birth and death records and census - what can be considered a common primary source in Germany?

The genealogist who posted three earlier generations (now a total of 10 generations) of my family tree cited his source of information as "Elections". I need a better translation of what this means in English, as I'm certain that I have no clue.

I've sent this question to three different genealogy groups. Hopefully, I will get a good enough response to blog.

Well, I think the issue may finally be resolved. I'm still holding my breath somewhat.... Customer service replied again saying that there were suspect words in my index html file. The suspect words appeared in the following context. I hope someone will find this helpful.

Genealogybank.com - The link is no longer correct as the word "bank" is NOT ALLOWED.

In Item link # 32. Genuki.org.uk - Large collection of genealogical information pages for England, Irelnd, Scotland, Wales, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. - The word Ireland is intentionally mis-spelled because the word "Ireland" is NOT ALLOWED.

After removing these two words and mis-spelling them the suspect word "of" was skipped by their script. (thank goodness as it appeared nearly too many times to count.)

A review of free website hosts for my genealogy

I've been looking for a free website provider for my genealogy pages. The only way to decide which one will be the best one for me is to create my site and test them out.

I've run into a bit of trouble finding a provider who offers cgi and php and a database. Not having a database isn't a big deal because there are ways around it and services by other providers who specialize exclusively in databases. I can't seem to find one that offers both or at least a combination of all three so I'll end up combining two sites in order to get what I want. All for free, of course, with hopefully a minimum amount of advertisements on the pages.

Angelfire wins the award for providing the cgi for forms.

Geocities also wins an award for forms.

100webspace.net is great because it offers a database and a bit of php for forums. The do not offer cgi for forms, however, which is something that I wanted for my genealogy website. Geocties and Angelfire both do not offer database creation or php forums.

I am also looking for FTP.

Angelfire doesn't offer FTP, neither does Geocities.

Two plus' and two minus'.

TopCities.com was also attempted. Haven't been able to see the page, yet! The server times out and the page never loads. TopCities did offer FTP, too, which was a shame. Big minus that the page cant be called back up and the server times out! Can't view the space.

Freewebsites.com seems to be a great choice for FTP, but they do not offer cgi, php or forms. (That I can see so far.)

Fortunecity also offers a free website, but I can't see using forms on that site, either.

Getting an outside site just for forms may be an option that I have to live with for now. 100webspace.net and OurFamily.com both offer message boards. OurFamily.com has wonderful response time to questions.

I really like the ease of use of the OurFamily.com site, but they again do not offer FTP access. So thats a minus.

Simply finding the right place to find help on 100webspace.net is an issue. The have so many options that you need to take an introductory course before even utilizing their wonderful services. I'm overwhelmed by what they offer and thrilled at the same time. So that decision was nearly made when blamo...

I'm running into a browser compatablity issue. Blamo again! The css isn't viewing. Blamo one more time. Permissions are not set properly and so forth and so on.

I'm beginning to believe that less is more when it comes to finding a free webspace provider.

A few webpages in placeholding position for now

The new sites are partially functioning. There will have to be a search engine added in addition to the counter codes, but for the most part a placeholder page is there. I ran into problems over on b0x.com as a few advertisments just redirected and took over the complete page. It is some scripting error of mine I would imagine.

You can't imagine the trouble in finding free webspace. First they don't offer enough room, or cgi or php. Then there is the issue of its advertising and the advertisements placement. Of course, the web editors are only online or they only offer ftp. What a lovely surprise was my initial response to 100webspace.net. FTP, PHP, SQL, and so many other extras that I can't name them here much less remember what they are for! Nice, huh? Well, we'll see how long it takes for THIS bubble to burst again.... I hope that this server is where I can stay for now as I'm ever so tired of looking.

I found one site that listed many, many free websites and contrasted the amount of space offered and whether or not they also offered FTP access. TopSites was listed. For some reason, I've never heard of them or rather I have, but it has been such a long time that I have forgotten. The interface to sign up was simple enough, but WAIT! The site was copyrited back in 2006. It is now 2009. Dang it! Foiled again! They indicated that FTP was offered, free site, etc. I was emailed a password. I couldn't log in. I sent myself a reminder. I still couldn't log in. I checked and rechecked with the FAQ then dumped it. So much for genealogy.topsites.com. I'll mark that one off of my list, too. (I went back later with a different OS and the FTP worked.) humph.

When I'm using XP, http://genealogy.b0x.com webpage does a disappearing act, but in other systems it appears. Strange. The same goes for the TopCities page. The OurFamily.com site appears fine. OurFamily.com will even give you an email address. They do not offer free FTP, however.

Freewebsites.com offers free ftp to create a free website. Well, they forgot to mention the advertisements. At first, the ads were just at the top of the page and a small link at the bottom. Today, the site totally redirects to an advertisement to Hawaii. UGH!

Searching for webspace ...other than http://genealogy.b0x.com or Freewebsites.com. I suppose the old saying goes, if its too good to be true, it probably is!
